It shows which front seats are occupied. Obviously a driver is in so the left light points down...
bored... making ship up. seems plausible

were they like that steady, or is that just in the photo?
if the former, then yeah, either one or more LEDs or the driver circuitry failed.
if the latter, it’s because the brightness is controlled via pulse-width modulation (PWM) and the camera simply caught the two tail lights in a different part of their duty cycles.

yep, then just failed diodes/drivers. I regularly see Chargers with various LEDs burned out in the tail light bar.

He was likely in an accident and decided to provide the parts himself for the repair. Ordering new tails on eBay, it’s clear that one of them is
from Australia.
My X-type is too a real Jaguar

Even though they are owned by Germans, the Prince of Darkness knows no borders if it is a historic British brand.

R56 has normal light bulbs, so they just have one burnt each side. R56 also has a bulb check warning the driver is ignoring.
I saw another car recently with an interesting asymmetrical burnt out pattern

It’s an icon that comes up in the little display in the tach when starting. More likely the don’t know/ care what it means.
Incidentally my 1985 Jaguar has a bulb check light. It even works correctly.
